The GLRA3 gene encodes the alpha-3 subunit of the neuronal glycine receptor, a ligand-gated chloride channel composed of ligand-binding alpha and structural beta polypeptides (Kingsmore et al., 1994 [PubMed 7894176]).[supplied by OMIM, Nov 2009] Function: The glycine receptor is a neurotransmitter-gated ion channel. Binding of glycine to its receptor increases the chloride conductance and thus produces hyperpolarization (inhibition of neuronal firing). Subunit: Pentamer composed of alpha and beta subunits Subcellular Location: Cell junction, synapse, postsynaptic cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
